San Francisco 49ers' first-round pick Ricky Pearsall could have significant opportunity at OTAs
Robert Kupbens-USA TODAY Sports

Over the weekend, the NFL world got its first look at a host of the top rookies in full uniform, including San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Ricky Pearsall.

Pearsall took part in the NFLPA's rookie premiere over the weekend, donning the complete attire he will wear during his maiden season in the league for the first time since the 49ers selected him 31st overall last month.

That promotional event now complete, Pearsall's focus will swiftly move to the first real examination of his progress in the weeks following his selection.

San Francisco hosts organised team activities this week as the 49ers step up their preparations for a 2024 campaign in which they will look to go one better after losing the Super Bowl in agonizing fashion last season.

Pearsall has already seen the practice field for the 49ers at rookie minicamp. Now, having had the chance to absorb the 49ers' playbook, he will have an opportunity to prove he has learned it quickly and raise hopes he can be a significant contributor in year one despite the pass-catchers ahead of him in the pecking order.

No live contact drills are permitted in OTAs, but with 7-on-7, 9-on-7, and 11-on-11 drills permitted, Pearsall's knowledge of the playbook figures to be tested as he looks to build an early rapport with 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy.

His opportunities to do so during OTAs may be increased depending on Brandon Aiyuk's level of participation.

The 49ers' leading receiver from the last two seasons is seeking a contract extension, but he and the Niners are not said to be close on a deal.

Aiyuk is not obliged to report to OTAs. Given the apparent impasse between him and the 49ers, the likeliest scenarios are that elects not to do so, or that he does report but does not participate in any of the on-field drills.

Either decision from Aiyuk would likely create more chances for Pearsall to rapidly develop an understanding with Purdy, though his success in doing so will be at least partially contingent on how much of Kyle Shanahan's playbook he has already managed to memorize.

For all members of the rookie class and especially for a first-round pick in Pearsall who caught many people by surprise, the honeymoon period is over. Now the hard work starts and, though training camp will be more significant, Pearsall's ability to impress at a time when Aiyuk may not be on the field could go some way to determining how often he sees the field on offense as a rookie.
